Guinea Pig Food Safety Guide
Check common foods and serving guidance for guinea pigs. When in doubt, stick to hay, water, pellets, and gradual fresh-food additions.
Remember: Fresh foods are treats, not the main diet. The foundation should remain unlimited hay, fresh water, and a measured daily pellet portion.

Feeding Rules That Always Apply
Introduce slowly
Start with a tiny piece and watch for loose stools or behavior changes for 24 hours before offering more.
Keep treats small
Even safe foods can become risky in large amounts. Treats should remain a small part of the diet.
Remove uneaten fresh foods
Take leftovers out of the cage within 1 to 2 hours to prevent spoilage and pests.
Best Everyday Choices
- Unlimited timothy hay or similar grass hay
- Fresh water in a clean bottle or heavy bowl
- A measured portion of fortified pellets
- Romaine lettuce, bell pepper, and cilantro as common greens
- Small fruit portions only a few times per week
